The History
The Service League of Natchitoches, Inc. was founded in 1950 by a group of local women who sought to make a positive impact on the Natchitoches community. Over the years, the League has achieved its mission of service by supporting a variety of community projects, charitable initiatives, educational programs, scholarships, and efforts to preserve local history, most notably through the restoration and upkeep of the Prudhomme Rouquier House.
This historic home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is significant as the only multi-story bousillage structure west of the Mississippi River. It stands as a point of pride and a revenue source for the League’s ongoing community service work, helping to preserve Natchitoches' historical legacy.
The Prudhomme Rouquier House, built around the turn of the 18th century by Francois Rouquier for his wife, Marie Louise Prudhomme, is located in the National Historic Landmark District of Natchitoches. The Service League has carefully restored and continues to operate the property, generating funds through the sale of three cookbooks. The House is available for special event rentals and can be toured by appointment.
Since its inception, the League’s members have worked tirelessly to raise funds for their many projects, including the restoration of the Prudhomme-Rouquier House. Recognized as the largest bousillage house in the United States, the Prudhomme-Rouquier House remains a proud home to the League.
